HOW TO WALK

faintly in the sand
sounds of quiet in no-man’s land
gauzy cloth clings to the ankles
of melancholy

maybe bit by bit
light will buoy the sinking ship
what happens in the ‘morrow has no
bearing on today

dimly up ahead
are small marks of a trite tread
follow – follow straight around
ignore the folly

slowly drag a smile
crook’d upon a sea-dregs aisle
wash away the effort on the
transience of clay

truly strikes the heart
do those wonders that fall apart
what solid things go up come down;
better to step lightly
